Delpen (also known as Delpsheia) is a short but rewarding hike located on the northeast side of Austvågøya in the Lofoten Islands. The 2.2 km round-trip trail is steep in parts but not technical, making it a moderate climb suitable for hikers with basic fitness. The hike takes approximately 1.5–2 hours round trip.
Despite its short length, the panoramic views from the summit make this hike well worth the effort. From the 374m summit, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of Grunnførfjorden, turquoise waters, and surrounding mountain peaks.
Start driving west from Svolvær on E10, the main road that runs through Lofoten. After about 15 km, turn off the E10 at the sign that says Lauvik.
Follow the small road called “Midnattsolsveien” for about 17 km until you come to an intersection. At the intersection, turn right towards Fiskebøl.
Before you reach the small village of Delp, look for a parking lot on the right side of the road. It is signposted “Matmora” (which is another hike in the area). This is where you park. Parking is free, and there is enough space for several cars.
Click here to find the parking lot on Google Maps.
The hike starts right behind the parking lot. Look for a gate in the fence, which marks the beginning of the trail. Pass through the gate, and you’ll see a clear dirt path leading up the hill. The trail is well-used and easy to follow, with some red markings to guide you.
The hike to Delpen starts with a steep ascent right from the parking lot. The first part of the trail takes you through a birch forest, where the path is a mix of dirt, rocks, and tree roots. This section is the most challenging, as you gain most of the 374m elevation early on. It’s a short but intense climb that takes around 30–40 minutes, so be prepared for a good workout.
As you climb higher, the trees begin to thin out, and the landscape opens up. Eventually, you reach the grassy plateau at the top, where the ground levels out, making for an easier final stretch. The summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views. To the east, you’ll see the turquoise waters of Grunnførfjorden, with the road causeway stretching across the fjord. Looking south, the impressive Matmora (788m) rises dramatically in the distance, and on clear days, you can enjoy views over the open sea. I
If you hike in summer, Delpen is also a fantastic spot to experience the midnight sun, as the summit has an unobstructed view toward the northern horizon.
If you want to extend the hike, there is an option to continue further along the ridge toward Matmora, but this turns the hike into a much longer and more demanding journey.
