Hoven, standing at 367 meters above sea level, is one of the most accessible and rewarding hikes in Lofoten. Located on the island of Gimsøy, this moderate trail offers a 3.8 km round-trip hike that typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours to complete. The well-marked trail leads up a grassy slope, providing gradual but steady elevation gain before reaching the summit.
The trail is suitable for most hikers, including beginners and families, as there are no technical sections or exposed areas.
Hoven is also a fantastic spot to experience the midnight sun during summer, as the open summit provides unobstructed views toward the northern horizon.
To reach the starting point of the hike, follow the E10 highway from either Svolvær or Leknes and turn off at the sign for Lofoten Golf Links on Gimsøy. Once you leave the E10, continue along the coastal road until you reach the golf course, where you will find a designated parking lot.
Parking is free, and the lot is large enough to accommodate several vehicles. Since Hoven is a popular hike, especially in summer, arriving early or later in the evening can help you avoid crowds.

The trail begins directly from the parking area. Look for the signs at the parking lot indicating the route to Hoven. The first section of the trail is an easy 500-meter stroll alongside the golf course on flat terrain, making for a pleasant warm-up. After this stretch, the incline gradually becomes steeper as the trail leads away from the golf course and toward the grassy mountainside. The path is well-defined, so navigation is straightforward—simply follow the main trail up toward the summit.
Hiking Hoven is a moderate yet rewarding experience, with a trail that is easy to follow and well-maintained throughout.
After leaving the golf course, the real ascent begins. The trail quickly gains elevation, transitioning from a gentle grassy slope to a steeper incline. While the climb may feel challenging in places, the path is wide and stable, making it accessible to most hikers. Along the way, there are several natural resting spots with breathtaking views, perfect for taking short breaks and admiring the surrounding landscape.
As you climb higher, the panoramic views begin to unfold. Looking back, you’ll see the golf course, the scattered farmhouses of Gimsøy, and the coastline stretching toward the Norwegian Sea. The final section of the trail is rockier but not technical, and before long, you will reach the flat, open summit of Hoven.
At 367 meters, the summit offers one of the best 360-degree views in Lofoten. To the north, the open Atlantic Ocean extends endlessly, with the Vesterålen islands visible on clear days. To the south, the jagged peaks of Lofoten create a dramatic contrast against the coastline. Looking east and west, you’ll see the rolling hills, beaches, and the scattered lakes of Gimsøy. The summit provides plenty of space to sit, take in the views, and enjoy a snack before heading back down.
With its gentle slopes, incredible views, and accessibility, Hoven is one of the best easy-to-moderate hikes in Lofoten. Whether you’re looking for a short day hike or a midnight sun adventure, this trail offers a memorable experience with minimal effort.
