Hiking to Kvalvika Beach in Lofoten is one of the most scenic and rewarding hikes in the region. Nestled between dramatic cliffs and facing the open sea, Kvalvika is a remote and untouched beach that offers a stunning contrast between golden sand and rugged mountains. The hike is relatively short but requires some effort due to elevation gain and potentially muddy conditions.
Kvalvika Beach is located on Moskenesøya island in Flakstad Municipality, near the village of Fredvang. Cross the Fredvang Bridges, which connect the mainland to Moskenesøya, and continue toward Yttersand.
There are two main parking options depending on your preferred route:
Parking Kvalvika Beach (Shortest Route): This is the best starting point for a shorter hike and is marked as “Parking Kvalvika Beach” on Google Maps. Located near Torsfjorden along road Fv808, this parking lot accommodates around 16 cars. The hike from here is 2 km one way and takes 1 to 1.5 hours. The trail ascends steadily to about 180 meters before leveling out and descending toward the beach.

Innersand Parking (Same parking as the hike to Ryten): If you want to extend your hike, you can start from Innersand Parking, reached by driving toward Yttersand and turning left at a red house where the road splits. Follow the signs for Indresand. This parking lot offers more space and facilities such as toilets and waste disposal. From here, the hike is 3 km one way with an elevation gain of 260 meters. The return journey requires ascending before descending back toward the parking lot. Hiking time is 1.5 to 2 hours each way, depending on fitness level and trail conditions.

Note: Both parking areas fill up quickly in peak season, so arriving early is recommended. Avoid parking in unauthorized spots to prevent fines and respect the local community.
The trailhead for the shortest route starts at Parking Kvalvika Beach near Torsfjorden. It is marked and follows a clear path that ascends steadily before leveling out and descending toward the beach.
For those starting from Innersand Parking, the trail follows the Ryten hiking route before branching off toward Kvalvika Beach. It is longer and includes more elevation gain but offers stunning views along the way.

The shortest route from Parking Kvalvika Beach is 2 km one way, with an elevation gain of 180 meters. The trail begins with a steady climb over rocky and occasionally muddy terrain, with some wooden planks in place to assist with traction. As the trail flattens, breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline appear before the final descent to the beach.
The longer route from Innersand Parking is 3 km one way, with an elevation gain of 260 meters. This trail follows part of the Ryten hiking route before branching off toward Kvalvika. It is a more strenuous option but rewards hikers with elevated viewpoints and a more gradual descent to the beach.
Kvalvika Beach itself is a spectacular stretch of golden sand, surrounded by towering cliffs and facing the open Norwegian Sea. Its remote, untouched nature makes it a favorite spot for campers and photographers.
For those looking for an extra challenge, hiking up to Ryten (543 meters) from Kvalvika provides an incredible aerial view of the beach.
