The Fløya hike is a moderately challenging trail that combines well-constructed paths with steeper, more demanding sections. The round-trip distance is approximately 3.6 kilometers, with an elevation gain of about 590 meters. Hikers can expect to spend between 2.5 to 3 hours completing the journey, depending on pace and conditions. Along the way, you’ll encounter the iconic Djevelporten (Devil’s Gate), a rock wedged between two cliffs, offering a dramatic and photo-worthy viewpoint.
The trailhead is conveniently located near the center of Svolvær. Parking is available just behind the small Football pitch behind the Svolvær Barnehage (kindergarten) on Blåtindveien.
It’s advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot.

From the parking area behind Svolvær Barnehage, locate the trailhead marked by signs indicating the route to Fløya and Djevelporten. The initial section leads through a small forested area before reaching the base of the Sherpa stairs, known locally as “Djeveltrappa” (Devil’s Staircase).
The hike begins with the ascent of the Sherpa stairs, consisting of 503 stone steps meticulously constructed to provide a stable and straightforward climb. This section, while steep, is well-maintained and suitable for hikers with a reasonable fitness level. Benches are strategically placed along the route, offering rest points to admire the emerging views over Svolvær.
After approximately 1.4 kilometers and around 45 minutes of hiking, you’ll arrive at Djevelporten. This unique rock formation, wedged between two cliffs, provides a thrilling photo opportunity and a chance to rest before the more demanding part of the hike.
Beyond Djevelporten, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. Hikers should be prepared for sections that require careful footing and occasional use of hands for balance. After about 25 minutes from Djevelporten, you’ll reach the summit of Fløya. The panoramic views from the top are truly spectacular, encompassing the town of Svolvær, the surrounding archipelago, and the vast expanse of the Norwegian Sea.
